We took a trip to Puerto Viejo this weekend – a little beach town on the southern Caribbean coast. It was nice to escape the fumes of San Pedro and spend a weekend in a cool town with some nice little beaches and perfect water. It was about a 3-4 hour bus ride, which included a little jaunt through the rain forest – I was like a kid at Christmas I tell ya. It’s as if the forests themselves do the raining, and the decibel-level of the sounds from inside reminded me of that once-every-13-years sound we had in Chicago last year, only a wider range of wildlife does the talking. And I was unable to take any pictures because we so quickly bypassed them, but it seemed like every couple hundred yards a random mini waterfall would appear out of the side of the forest. I felt like I was in Narnia.
We stayed at a place called Rocking J’s, so named because you sleep in hammocks for about $4.50/night. I had my doubts about the wisdom of that choice, but aside from a few mosquito bites on the ankles, it was fabulous. Word of wisdom – when sleeping in a hammock, sleep diagonally. I got a little sunburned because I couldn’t remove myself from the ocean long enough to reapply sunscreen, but also enjoyed a little evening with the Caribbean sea, and some good good pina coladas.
Another little slideshow below (forgive me, I just figured out how to do this) with pictures of all of this. This is mostly to show the size of the crabs down there. Also, if you can tell me what that sign means, you win.
