The Adventures of Katie and Andy: Washing Clothes

September 5, 2008 · 2 Comments

Andy is my (fabulous) roommie here.

Neither of us brought many clothes to Costa Rica, and after a week we had run smack out. We had been eyeing a little “washing machine” on the back porch that we were planning to use. Our evening yesterday went as follows:

8:00 – we get home and I go “I’ll wash the clothes if you cook dinner.” I quickly discover that the washing machine is technically a washing machine, it just doesn’t actually work. At which point I think (genuinely) “oh this’ll be fun, I’ll just hand wash our clothes, it’ll be like the good ole days in South Africa. It probably won’t take 2 1/2 hours. My hands probably won’t chafe. My back is strong.”

So Andy promptly and efficiently does the dishes and cooks

So he promptly does the dishes and cooks

9:00 – Andy has cleaned the kitchen and finished cooking (and eating). Comes out and comments, “This takes a looong time.” Yes. A more accurate comment might have been “you specifically are no good at this, why can’t you make this happen any faster?” That’s a reasonable question.

10:00 – Andy has been hanging the clothes as I slowly finish them. Deadpan he asks – “Do you still think this is fun?”

No, Andy, No I don’t.
And the worst part – it’s rainy season right now, so the clothes are actually never going to dry. 24 hours later, they are every bit as wet as they were when we started. Anyone have a hair dryer?
See?

See?

Don’t expect this to happen a second time. I’m finding a laundromat.
