Trip to Arenal Volcano

September 15, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I went with my friend Jamie to a volcano called Arenal this weekend, and I’m going to go ahead and declare it the most beautiful area I’ve ever seen. Lush. That’s the word. Drowning in green. Below is a retrospetive to-do list. We’ll call it an ‘already done’ list.

1) Get lost – the first step to any good Costa Rican weekend adventure.

2) Go hiking around a volcano that’s constantly rumbling. You think it’s trippy thunder, then you realize you’re right next to a constantly active volcano.

3) Hike down to the most surreal waterfall eva, and go swimming in a prohibited area. It’s better this way.

4) Fall while crossing the river and drop your camera in the water, spend the next 2 hours trying to bring it back to life. Succeed.

5) Sip on fabulous pina colada.

6) Go to sketchy unlit hot spring beneath a bridge on the side of the road with a flashlight you borrowed from your taxi driver.

7) Decide that’s too sketchy and pay more than the rest of the trip combined to go to a hot springs resort across the street (not recommended)

8.) Decide that, dammit, you´re gonna get your money’s worth and go down the water slide at least once.

9) Lose glasses in water slide.

10) Review all that you’ve lost in coming to this overrated resort.

11) Find glasses after harrowing search, and decide ‘it could have been worse – I’ve recovered my camera and my glasses both in one day.’

12) Drink nightly Imperial and call it a day – a good, good day.

It was marvelous, despite my bitterness about the hot spring resort. You should come.
